Verizon Wireless to offer Apple iPhone in January

Verizon Wireless will start selling Apple's iPhone next year, ending AT&T's U.S. exclusive on the phone, say two people familiar with the plans.

The device will be available to customers in January, according to the people, who declined to be named because the information isn't public. Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman, and Jeffrey Nelson, a Verizon Wireless spokesman, declined to comment. AT&T also declined to comment. USA TODAY was unable to independently verify the reports.

Speculation on a Verizon iPhone has been rampant in the tech blogosphere. If the reports are true, the iPhone, which has been the sole domain of rival AT&T in the U.S. since June 2007, will give Verizon a boost in its smartphone competition, UBS analyst John Hodulik says. Verizon customers, who numbered 92.8 million at the end of the first quarter, may buy 3 million iPhones a quarter, he says.

"Apple is going to dramatically increase the number of devices it sells in the U.S. when exclusivity at AT&T ends," Hodulik says. "It's hard to ignore the quality issues that AT&T has faced."

Verizon Wireless, which is building a high-speed fourth-generation network, plans to unveil several devices that will run on the new technology in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, CEO Lowell McAdam has said. Verizon's CDMA-based wireless network differs from the GSM technology AT&T's network is based on.

The iPhone has helped AT&T add subscribers even as the U.S. mobile-phone market nears saturation. In the first three months of this year, about a third of AT&T's iPhone activations came from customers new to the carrier. Without those 900,000 new subscribers, AT&T might have posted a loss in contract customers that quarter, analysts say.

AT&T has battled customer complaints about its network and dedicated an extra $2 billion to upgrade it this year.

A Verizon partnership is a victory for Apple over rivals such as Research In Motion and Motorola, whose phones are promoted by the carrier. Motorola makes Droid phones that use Google's Android operating system. RIM makes BlackBerrys. "For Apple, it means a larger addressable market," says Andy Hargreaves, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities. "It's also good news for Apple in that it will spread the load on the wireless data networks."

Apple has sold more than 50 million iPhones since their introduction. The latest version, iPhone 4, sold more than 1.7 million units in the first three days after its June 24 debut.

A release at Verizon in the first quarter would help Apple's sales in the U.S. grow to at least 15 million units next year from 11 million in 2010, Barclays Capital analysts said in a note Tuesday. Apple's suppliers have been ramping up production of components for a phone on Verizon's CDMA network, according to the research report.

iPhone 4 Problems Comes Early

Apple’s latest jesus phone, the iPhone 4 was released in the United States today, and already reported problems are starting to pile up.

The biggest reported bug with the iPhone 4 is said to be a reception issue when you hold the phone. Users say that when they touch the phone, the signal drops by anything up to 3 bars, and returns when they take their hands off it.

But what makes this somewhat bizarre is that the problem primarily occurs if you’re left handed. It would appear that the primary antenna in the iPhone 4 is on the left hand side of the phone; a left handed user would place the phone in the palm of their hand with the phone touching on the left side.

The iPhone 4′s new glass is also under fire, with users reporting that it’s too easy to break: I’m sure if you dropped an older model it would break as well, but the word is that the iPhone 4 is far easier to break.

The glass, which also appears for the first time on the back of the phone, is said to scratch far more easily that previous models, although without a test unit we can’t confirm that.

The new “retina display” is reported to be having some problems, with some reports suggesting that users are getting yellow dots and splotches stuck on the screen.

Last but not least, the iPhone 4′s “Facetime” video phone software is under fire from privacy activists because calls made using the app aren’t secure. Video calls made using Facetime could in theory be intercepted if being made over an unsecure WiFi network.

Any new phone Apple has ever released has come in for criticism for some reason or another, so we’re taking the claims so far with a grain of salt, however the number of them might suggest that Apple may, at the very least, have some quality control issues with the phone.

Apparently so.

iPhone 4 users are reporting en masse that their new handsets suffer a significant loss of signal strength when the phone’s antenna is touched with bare skin. Unfortunately, it is pretty much impossible to use a caseless iPhone 4 without touching the antenna, because the steel band that runs around the entire outside of the case is the antenna. To avoid touching it you’d somehow have to pinch the front and back of the phone between two fingers.

The phenomenon is so widespread that it may be nearly universal. Gizmodo has over a dozen videos showing the phenomenon, and tech blogs from Wired to Engadget are up in arms about it.

What’s going on is a bit of a mystery. Surely Apple tested the iPhone 4 before releasing it, and with a problem this serious, testers should have noticed the issue. (Then again, iOS 4 multitasking got out of the door without being fully baked, so who knows.) On the other hand, beta iPhone 4 units were famously kept in a mock iPhone 3GS sleeve, so perhaps only limited testing was done with bare units.

Wired offers a semblance of an explanation as to why this phenomenon is happening: When you touch a TV antenna, the picture changes because, in a nutshell, your body becomes part of the antenna construct. The mystery is that with a TV, touching the antenna usually improves the picture, whereas with the iPhone 4, it makes things worse. My best guess is that the radio frequencies used for TV are more conducive to the human body than a cell phone’s frequencies are.

Apple has also acknowledged some bugs with the way the phone detects and manages signal strength. It says those bugs will be fixed soon, so hopes are high that a firmware update will solve the problem.

Meanwhile, it appears that adding a case to the phone will improve or eliminate the issue, and Lord knows there are plenty of those on the market already.

iPhone 4 Has A Gyroscope Gaming

Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 4, its next smartphone, and while we won't cover the phone as a whole here at Gadget News and Info, the device will be getting a gyroscope.

This has some nice implications for gaming as it should allow developers to make better use of the iPhone as a motion and gesture based controller. It should hopefully make the device much more precise.

Apple describes the new sensor on its website:

iPhone 4 is the first phone with a built-in three-axis gyroscope. When paired with the accelerometer, it makes iPhone 4 capable of advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, angular velocity, and rotation rate. Translation: More motion gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience.

Steve Jobs just announced that the new iPhone 4 will include a gyroscope, which should be a great addition for gaming, augmented reality and even 3D apps.

Apparently the iPhone 4 beat this industry insider’s prediction of gyroscopes in a mass market phone by 2 years.

Just like we thought, Sprint has just announced what we were previously calling the HTC Supersonic. The official name however is EVO 4G, and it’s both supersonic and evolutionary. Really: This boy is stacked.

Underneath the 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD is a QSD8650 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 1GB of storage, and 512MB of RAM. The rest is your standard superphone specs with an affair of 802.11b/g, HDMI-out, Sprint’s new Mi-Fi-like hotspot app and an 8GB microSD card along with the goods to run on Sprint’s 4G network. CDMA still handles the voice while a combo of EV-DO and WiMAX handles the data.

The EVO 4G should hit Sprint this summer and here’s hoping it’s priced reasonably well. This might just be the phone to beat in 2010. Then again, CTIA just started.

iPhone 3.1.3 Firmware Released

Apple releases update that fixes a handful of small issues.

Apple has released a very simplistic firmware update for the iPhone, fixing a number of minor issues with the device. The 3.1.3 update can be downloaded directly from iTunes and is aimed to tackle the accuracy of the iPhone 3GS battery level, the launch consistency of some third-party apps, and fix a bug that caused some apps to crash while using the Japanese Kana keyboard. Wheeee!

BlackBerry Messenger Down?

BlackBerry Messenger Down - I’m not a BlackBerry Messenger user myself, but according to CrackBerry, they are various reports that the popular BlackBerry messaging feature is having some troubles. For instance, some users are reporting that many or all of their messages are not being delivered, others claim the messages go through, but do not show the D [delivered] or R [read] on top of the check mark. Lastly, other users seem to be unaffected.

At the moment there are not many details. We’ll update as soon as we learn more. Be sure to let us know if you’re experiencing any issues.

Update: Word has it that there’s a partial outage affecting some North American carriers only. Apparently, the outage also affects web browsing and apps that use data. Email is safe.

The problems are reportedly widespread in countries throughout the Americas, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. Some customers are receiving e-mails, according to reports, but with delays.

Verizon has confirmed its customers are having problems. Users on other systems, such as AT&T and T-Mobile, are also experiencing problems, according to online forums. However, messaging systems, like text and voice, seem to be working for BlackBerry users.

Verizon is the iPhone's next big feature

There are many things driving the popularity and growth of the Apple's iPhone, but as we enter 2010, one analyst believes the addition of Verizon will be the iPhone's big new feature.

Gene Munster, senior research analyst for investment bank Piper Jaffray, said in a research note to clients 0Wednesday that he believes there is a 70 percent chance that Apple will launch a new iPhone with Verizon in 2010. Munster puts the timing of such a move around the middle of the year.

That makes sense, since Apple has used June and July to launch all three of its iPhone models. The company also used the summer months to debut the App Store in 2008. It seems reasonable to speculate that Apple would continue with its schedule of introducing a new iPhone in mid-2010.

Munster said a move to Verizon would more than double Apple's current potential market by 89 million subscribers, adding to the already 82 million available on AT&T.

Of course, at this point the big problem is Apple's arrangement with AT&T as its exclusive carrier in the U.S. That deal is widely thought to end in 2010, although talks between the two companies are said to be ongoing, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The analyst's report also cites the iPhone's apps as playing a major role in the future growth of the device.

"We have seen a shift in the reason why consumers buy an iPhone. Initially, it was the touch screen and easy access to the Internet" said Munster. "Today, apps are cited as one of the top three reasons consumers buy an iPhone."

Verizon Droid Eris's of HTC

If you can live without a hardware keyboard, the HTC Droid Eris is an affordable and feature-packed alternative to the Motorola Droid.

The HTC Droid Eris marks the second in Verizon Wireless's parade of the Droids. Also due this week from Verizon, the Droid Eris ($200 with a two-year contract, price as of 11/5/2009) shares the Droid moniker and many features of competing Android phones, but it also adds some touches that improve the experience for business users.

The Droid Eris touchscreen handset (a CDMA version of the HTC Hero) has dimensions similar to, and much of the same functionality as, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G GSM unit, also made by HTC. Side by side, the first thing that jumps out is the Eris's brighter, sharper-looking display. While both handsets have a 3.2-inch, 480-by-320 pixel screen, the Droid Eris supports 262,000 colors while the myTouch 3G has just 65,000 colors.

Unlike the myTouch 3G, which has six hardware keys on the front plus a roller mouse button, the Eris replaces the top four buttons (Home, Menu, Back, and Search) with embedded softkeys. In practice, the four software keys were usable, but not as easy to activate as their hardware counterparts. I've found the myTouch 3G's real Send and End buttons and roller mouse (which glows if you have an incoming text message or other notification) more useful than the Droid Eris's softkeys when fumbling around in the dark. (The Motorola Droid lacks any front-panel hardware buttons.)

The Droid Eris has a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM 7600 CPU, while the myTouch 3G has a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM 7201A chip. The Eris has a 5.0-megapixel camera (up from a 3.2-megapixel camera), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0; includes a GPS receiver; and supports the 800MHz and 1900MHz bands on the Verizon Wireless network. It also has a standard headset jack, something the myTouch 3G lacks.

Under the hood is the Android 1.5 operating system, not the Android 1.6 (Donut) update or Android 2.0 (on the Motorola Droid). (T-Mobile has already pushed out the Donut update to its G1 and myTouch 3G customers.) However, some of the improvements tossed in with Donut are in the Eris anyway. For example, the updated Google Maps application, which includes transit directions, comes with the phone; and the video and still cameras are accessible through the same interface, as is the case with Android 1.6. Not present here is the Google Maps Navigation turn-by-turn application that comes with Android 2.0.

Android Marketplace, from which you can find hundreds of independently developed applications for the phone, uses the Android 1.5 version in the Droid Eris. This version unfortunately doesn't support thumbnail images of the apps. A Verizon Wireless spokesman says the Droid Eris phone will be receiving Android updates at some point in the future.

What sets the Droid Eris apart is how it caters to business users. For example, it allows direct calendar and contact synchronization with Microsoft Outlook. This means that, unlike Google-branded Android phones, you don't have to sync your data with your online Google account first before downloading it to the phone--a boon for users. Also, Verizon has preinstalled an Adobe PDF file viewer, a link to Verizon's Visual Voicemail, a "Stocks" link to financial market information from Yahoo Finance, and support for Microsoft Exchange corporate e-mail.

Also preinstalled: A Peep application for Twitter and Footprint, which allows you to capture an image, attach comments, and use the phone's GPS capabilities to log its location and create a map, all of which can be shared.

Interestingly, the Droid Eris has the now-familiar pull-down Android notification screen, but the home screen behaves differently. Instead of having a pull-up menu containing all of the applications, the home screen instead offers a link to the application menu display.

While the unit can't match the Motorola Droid's 420-by-854-pixel display, the HTC Droid Eris performed well with standard and high-definition YouTube videos, depending on the quality of the data connection.

The 5-megapixel camera lacks a flash but performed adequately, capturing reasonable images under adequate ambient light. The virtual keyboard, which offers haptic feedback if desired, worked well in portrait or landscape mode. At just 4.2 ounces and measuring 4.5-by-2.2-by-0.5-inches, the unit fits comfortably in a shirt pocket.

If you want a cheaper Android-based alternative to the Droid and can live without a hardware keyboard, the Droid Eris is a good choice at $100.

Verizon's anti-iPhone gets its first commercial: 'Droid Does'

We knew Verizon Wireless would soon be throwing caution to the wind in an effort to sway uncommitted smartphone buyers towards Big Red, and it looks like the November-bound Motorola Droid will be VZW's anti-iPhone. The spot, which launched tonight and can be view in its entirety after the break, is a 30 second clip that begins by mocking Apple's cutesy music and iconic font typically seen in iPhone plugs. It reels off a number of things that the iPhone can't do, and then abruptly goes into full-on tease mode by flashing glimpses of a robot-controlled future and a tagline that simply states: "Droid Does." No shots of the actual Motorola Droid (or Sholes, as it was known in the past) are shown, but a dedicated teaser portal has already been erected; through that, we're told that the phone will boast Android 2.0 and a 5 megapixel camera. At this point, we'd say the gloves are definitely off -- AT&T, have anything to say for yourself, or is the iPhone doing just fine on its own?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

iPhone MMS Release Date

AT&T is on track to flip the switch to enable MMS functionality for U.S. iPhone users this Friday. The wireless carrier said that all users should be able to send and receive MMS messages by Friday afternoon.

Though considered one of the most advanced smartphones to date, the iPhone has been lacking a basic feature (in the U.S.) found on many other handsets -- MMS. But AT&T is finally ready to roll out MMS this Friday, after increasing criticism from unsatisfied iPhone users.

AT&T announced on their Facebook page that late Friday morning Pacific Time, or Friday afternoon for the rest of the country, is the time to fire up iTunes and connect your iPhone. You will have to download an updated carrier profile and sync it to your iPhone in order to have the MMS feature enabled. This will be the only way to enable MMS on your iPhone.

AT&T rushed to beef up their infrastructure over the last few months, in order to support the new MMS feature Apple unveiled in June, and now the wireless carrier is nervous about the launch, according to DSLReports.

The story quotes insiders involved with AT&T saying the early testing of the iPhone MMS feature "has been a little rocky" and a 40 percent increase in network traffic is expected on Friday, as many iPhone users will start toying with the new feature and send pictures and videos to each other.

AT&T's early testing of the MMS feature on the iPhone could also be an explanation of reports last week from a few lucky users that upgraded to the iPhone 3.1 OS and were suddenly able to send and receive MMS messages.

The capability to send and receive photos, videos, audio files, and contact info through the iPhone Messages app was introduced by Apple in June this year via the 3.0 software update. However, AT&T was late in the game at enabling this feature, although most carriers around the world did this throughout the summer.

Motorola Cliq

I got a brief chance to handle the Motorola Cliq Android phone—no pictures yet, unfortunately—and came away pleasantly surprised. The phone itself is about as tall as an iPhone, but it's definitely thinner than most QWERTY sliders.

Compared to the G1 this thing is svelte, and the keyboard is aligned correctly with the screen so there's no weird jarring going on when you're typing. The addition of the D-Pad, like we noted in the liveblog, is going to be fantastic for gaming/emulation gaming, and works like a D-Pad when navigating the phone as well. Very useful.

The sliding mechanism feels solid and desirable, as in, I want to open and close the thing all day just to hear the sound. The version I saw was white, and the finish was classy without being ostentatious, and definitely not cheap feeling. There's a heft to it, but it's definitely not heavy.

Nokia E63, previously rumored to be called Nokia E72, has recently appeared in a set of live shots, the first ones with the smartphone. These not only that confirm the existence of the device, but they also show the world that E63 has a lot in common with Nokia E71, launched by the Finns a few months ago.

By the way it looks, Nokia E63 seems to be a poorer version of E71. That’s because it’s almost completely made out of plastic (gone is that metallic case of E71) and its features are a bit incomplete.

Functions
Dialing performs to expectations and the smart dialing works very well. Once you start typing in a number it searches your phonebook for matches providing quick access to contacts. The sound quality is clear and the voice clarity is good when talking in a crowded public space.

Messaging again performs to the levels expected, although a personal gripe of mine is that if you want to delete just a few words of a text or a line and you hold the delete key for a fraction too long your whole message is erased and you have to start again, but this happens with all Samsung phones and not just with the U800.

The U800 handles all the common types of messages, SMS, EMS, MMS and emails, and you can store 500 SMS, 30 push messages, 200 broadcast messages and 30 configuration messages on the available 1GB memory.

The email client is adequate and can manage up to five accounts, POP or IMAP, and any file, business card, task or note can be sent as an attachment.

Display
The keypad is nicely spaced out and keeps to the same format as the U900 but has subtle changes like the dedicated video-call key and the application switch key which are no longer present. The buttons when pressed react well and the two buttons either side of the D-pad are slightly raised aiding user control and the selection of functions such as 'call' and 'end call' as well as selecting menu options.

The interface is typically Samsung and it is easy to navigate through the functions. The 2" screen has the full colour treatment and the backlighting is lit up brightly and images are sharp and of good quality. The main menu displays as a grid or a standard list and if you're familiar with the way Samsungs work you'll notice the U800 keeps with the trend of having the last used function items highlighted when you open a sub-menu. Not bad if you use one function over another lots of times such as using the music player, camera or texting.

There are various wallpapers present as you would expect but what is pretty nifty is the option to select photos that will play as a slideshow. You can even control how the transitions work.

Imaging
Somewhat disappointingly the U800 only comes with a 3MP camera however the picture quality is actually very good. The processing, sharpening and colour detail produces good results and the camera interface is easy to use and quick for finding settings so you don’t miss the 'moment'.

Video recording fared less well in our tests although a frame rate of 15 fps doesn't really help. Playback showed footage that was jumpy and bitty, however you can upload your clips online at the touch of a button providing you have a ShoZu account.

Music
The Samsung U800 has a good music player and with the 1GB internal memory and expandable memory micro SD card slot it has the potential to fulfill the promise.

It plays AAC, eACC+, MP3 & WMA music formats and will filter by author, album, composers, and genre. You can create your own playlists, and you will not be disappointed with the audio quality which was more than satisfactory for our tastes.

An FM radio is also bundled with the handset which has a self tune option and RDS which can be switched on or off.

Verdict
The U800 is a solid offering from Samsung. It builds on the success of the U900 Soul and proves that when things work they don't need to be changed. It looks great and performs well and is sure to have a good following.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, it appears that the reports of Motorola's death have been greatly exaggerated. At least that is the impression we have after spending some time with the new Motorola Krave ZN4 the company built for Verizon Wireless. The new Krave is an interactive touchscreen equipped media consumption device with a host of clever tricks in its bag.

As a media device, the Krave supports all of Verizon's 3G services, including TV and music, as well as Verizon's mobile email solution, GPS navigation, speaker independent voice dialing, and even visual voicemail. A 3.5mm headphone jack port means that people can use their own headphones to enjoy music and TV, while stereo Bluetooth gives users the ability to do it wirelessly. A microSDHC(INFO) card slot on the device has been tested with 8GB cards, which should provide for plenty of room for music as well as photos shot with the Krave's 2 megapixel camera.

While the Krave sports an all new touch version of the Verizon user interface on its capacitive touchscreen display, which works pretty well, the real magic here is built into the Krave's transparent flip. No mere hunk of random plastic, the Krave's front cover has layers of metal mesh inside it that not only drive the ear speaker without obvious wires, but the entire flip itself is touch sensitive and can be used to control the device without having to open it up. While you can't use the closed flip to write messages, buy music, or navigate the main menu, you can use it to read messages, control your music playback, and navigate the roads with VZ Navigator. Users can also view your photos and watch TV, too. Motorola has included a lock button, located on the Krave's right edge, that turns that functionality off for when the phone is thrown in a purse or pocket.

There is plenty more to the Krave than just that Ming-inspired flip front, though. As mentioned above, the new touch version of the Verizon UI is pretty good and quite responsive. The large WQVGA (400x240 pixel) touchscreen display requires only light touches to activate, and provides vibration haptic feedback when touched. The UI also works pretty quickly, too. The built-in accelerometer handles automatic screen rotation tasks for apps like the browser, mobile TV, and the virtual keyboard, which works in QWERTY mode when held horizontally. Flip the device back to portrait mode, and users can use the typical 12 key keypad for iTAP predictive or triple-tap non-predictive text entry. The QWERTY keyboard is a bit difficult to use due to the Krave's flip getting in the way, but it is still great for entering in URLs and certain other tasks.

The aforementioned browser has a neat little semi-transparent finger control that makes it easier to select small on-screen links with a fingertip. I was surprised at how well it worked, and I could easily see other platforms adopting a similar pointer to make browsing easier. The browser also supports just enough Flash to be able to view videos on YouTube, too.

The Motorola Krave ZN4 is offered in a dark gray color scheme with soft-touch paint around back and a polished metallic frame on the front face. The Krave's battery is claimed to be good for just over 4 hours of talk time or 20 days of standby. At 130g, it isn't exactly lightweight, but we feel it offers a lot of functionality that makes the heft worth it.

The Motorola Krave ZN4 is available today from Verizon Wireless for US$149.99, after a $50 mail-in rebate when purchased with a new two year agreement.

Two Nokia Eseries Announced

Today at the Nokia for Business event, Nokia announced two new, long awaited Eseries phones: the E66 and the E71.

Nokia E66 is a direct successor to the E65, a slider phone with 240x320 pixel screen, based on Symbian OS 9.2, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1. Featuring HSDPA/UMTS, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, WLAN b/g, 3.2 Megapixel AF camera, FM radio, built-in Assisted GPS and accelerometer, ARM11-based Freescale processor running at 369 MHz, 128 MB operating memory (RAM), 128 MB internal storage and microSD memory card slot, it doesn't leave much to be desired. With its highly elegant and very durable stainless steel casing and very well working spring-loaded slider, it's also a serious upgrade to the plasticy E65 when it comes to build quality, design and ergonomics.

Nokia E71, despite its name, with its large 320x240 display and Blackberry type QWERTY keyboard, is a successor to the E61/E61i rather than the E70. It has very similar technical specs to the E66 (3.2 MPix camera, A-GPS, HSDPA/UMTS, WLAN, 128 MB RAM, etc.) and the only difference (except for the design/form factor, of course) seems to be lack of accelerometer. Just like the E66, the E71 represents very high build quality, with solid, stainless steel (dark-silver painted) frame around the front side, durable metal battery cover on the back and high quality keyboard with nearly perfect tactile feedback.

Both the E71 and the E66 come preloaded with support for VPN, Microsoft Exchange (Mail for Exchange mobile email client), data encryption, dictionaries, QuickOffice 4.x suite, Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email solution as well as third party email solutions like System Seven and Visto Mobile.
